Not a Law Firm

ABOUT US

This charity is not a law firm

People can represent themselves without counsel and this is ok.

Fortunately in New Zealand, people have the right to represent themselves in a Court of Law. Help Myself Charitable Trust is not a Law Firm nor is it a charity that provides funding for people to pay a lawyer for their court appearances. Simply put, if you have a pen and paper in your hand and can write a sentence and sign your signature, you’re good to go.

Some things possible

What can be done

Writing a Will

With a pen and paper in hand, a specific heading, a date and with executors named, and compliant with requirements (they aren’t very difficult) you can do this yourself.

Power of Attorney

Certain formats need to apply but anyone with a computer and MS WORD, can draft up such a document that is compliant with regulations to make your document valid.

Dissolution of Marriage

Follow the plan, just like getitng married, you need to apply for the marriage licence and sign it in agreement. Undoing this licence, do this, then this, then this and you’re legally divorced. This can be done without any emotion. It’s just a process.

Previous case studies.

Court judgements.

There are many records available where the outcomes (judgements) of court applications are made publically available, which given an insight into the way a Family Court Judge will rule on a circumstance in line with current legislation.

Some of these court orders were made when either the applicant or the respondent were self represented, giving an understanding of how the Famly Court Judge views a Self represented person having equal rights to a person who is represented by Counsel.

By entering this website you are confirming that you understand and accept this website is administered by a Charity named "Help Myself Charitable Trust" and its content does not imply legal advice nor does any comment from its officers, administrators or associated persons whether verbal or written mean that legal advice has been given. Help Myself Charitable Trust exists as a resource for people who are interested in acting as a self-litigant in Family Court or Disputes Tribunal  proceedings. Before deciding to act as a self-litigant, we encourage users of this website to seek out other sources of legal information, including  but not limited to the Citizen's Advice Bureau (https://cab.org.nz) and Community Law (https://communitylaw.org.nz) and that if legal advice is sought, to contact a person with a practicing certificate. According to the New Zealand Law Society, a practising certificate certifies that the holder is a fit and proper person to practice law and allows them to describe themselves as 'a lawyer'. It is an offence for someone without a current practising certificate to describe themselves as a lawyer. Unless otherwise stated, persons associated with the Help Myself Charitable Trust and website, are not lawyers.
